Set up your control methodology early. Organize the procurement effort around the project WBS (insist on this). The goal is to feed construction.

Setup and maintain strong communications, especially with your expeditors. Above all, keep on top of material status. This is the ‘basket’ you want to watch. Know where your equipment/material is – do not take your vendor’s word for it. Remember: Trust but verify.
